Eating too much saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol can be a major cause of High Cholesterol.Saturated fat raises your LDL cholesterol level more than anything else in your diet. Trans fatty acids raises cholesterol levels.
Being overweight tends to increase your LDL level, lower your HDL level, and increase your total cholesterol level. Being overweight also may increase triglycerides.
A lack of regular exercise can lead to weight gain and raise your LDL cholesterol level. Also a lack of physical activity can lower your HDL.
High blood cholesterol can run in families. It begins at birth, and it can result in a heart attack at an early age. If family members have or had high cholesterol, you may also find that you can have it or even get it.
After you reach age 20, your cholesterol naturally begins to rise.
Some diseases may raise your risk of high cholesterol to become deadly.
These diseases include: hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease, and some types of liver disease. Some medicines can raise triglyceride levels and lower HDL (good) cholesterol levels. These medicines include thiazide, diuretics, beta-blockers, estrogen and corticosteroids.
